Madagascar

A Film Review By Jason L. King

Rating:Rated PG for mild language, crude humor and some thematic elements.
Starring:Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ross
Directed By:Mathew Vaughn

Final Grade:

What’s a better way to start off your summer than with cute and cuddly deranged penguins? Well as much fun as that actually tuns out to be, the fun doesn’t stop there. The folks at Dreamworks pictures have brought the zoo to life with Madagascar, an all new animated event for the whole family.

Madagascar is the story of Marty the Zebra and his pals Alex the Lion, Gloria the Hippo and Melman the Giraffe that find themselves in the wild during a zoo transport gone wrong thanks to the help of a group of menacing penguins. Now trapped in the wild with a group of loony lemurs the zoo critters learn about the wild and friendship.

Cute and Cuddly characters and a some great actors who lend their voices to this animated flick make Madagascar the fun filled animated film that families will love this summer season. Ben Stiller and Chris Rock as Alex and Marty works amazingly well and the two play off each other perfectly. Backed up by an easily forgettable performance by Jada Pinket Smith and an equally forgettable performance by Ross (I mean David “Ross” Schwimmer) Madagascar is filled full of some good laughs and a lighthearted script that flows smoothly from scene to scene.

But supporting creatures are what make the film exciting. It’s those crazy penguins that keep you laughing in the brief time they are on the screen. There is just something about conspiracy crazed penguins waddling about that make you laugh as they plot their trip to Antarctica. Mix that in with a jungle full of Lemurs whose leader whose lack of wits could only be challenged by Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson and you’re set for some great family friendly laughs for the kids and some for the grown ups as well.

Where Madagascar does fall through though is in its plot. I’m really not sure what the point is of the film. Normally every family film has a cathartic moment where the characters learn something, whether it is “true love conquers all” or “inner beauty is more important” or sometimes just “good defeats evil” but Madagascar doesn’t really bring anything like that to the table. I guess the point of Madagascar was the weak plot device about the power of true friendship. After all, a lion and a zebra as friends in the wild? It sounds kind of silly to me.

I wish I could say that Madagascar is the film of the year, but it’s not all that and a bag o’ potato chips. Sure it’s filled with some great laughs, and some great one liners but it’s another aspiring Shrek that doesn’t make the cut. The little kids will love it, but the adults will become quickly bored with the film despite its 85-minute runtime. The penguins are the film’s main attraction and their screen time is very short lived. The final verdict is that if you have kids, baby-sit for kids or are a really big kid at heart, you’re going to enjoy Madagascar. There are far more painful things to sit through. Take the kids out to this one and have some fun with them. They are only young for a little while; they grow up so fast! Not as fast as David “Ross” Schwimmer’s fading career, but pretty darn fast none the less!

Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith

A Film Review By Jason L. King

Rating:Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and some intense images.
Starring:Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman
Directed By:George Lucas

Final Grade:

The wait is over nerds! All Geeks assemble! Synchronize watches and begin to line up at a theater near you! The Final installment of the Star Wars Saga is finally here! So if you didn’t know, the theaters will be packed, and somewhere in Hollywood George Lucas will soon once again be rolling in a pile of your cash!

Now I know that as a film reviewer, I couldn’t sway a Star Wars fan to not see this film. I also know that I can’t sway anti-Star Wars fans to see the film. Hardcore star wars fans would purchase a ticket to a film that documented George Lucas’s bowel movements. As they would leave they would say “WOW! That was great! That computer Generated hunk of crap in the toilet after he stood up looked awesome!” With that in mind, Here is my best attempt at a review of the latest Star Wars film.

The story of Star Wars definitely takes a turn to the dark side as we watch Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) defy his teacher Obi Wan Kenobi and join the “dark side.” This is by far the “darkest” of all the star wars films, and even Lucas himself has said this is not a film for the kiddies. The film tries to demonstrate how one man’s greed and lust for power that it eventually causes his downfall.

Moving away from giving away major plot points and spoiling it for others, I think the most important thing to point out is that the movie has made some monumental steps in special effects. Lucas continues to be a genius when it comes to Special Effects, but his CGI becomes overbearing. Just like the tale he is trying to tell, Lucas’s greed and lust for CGI effects has actually started to be his downfall. The film suffers in plot points and in “great” story lines and instead tries to focus on visual effects. While the effects look snazzy, it feels way too much like a video game to me. If I wanted to watch a video game played out from start to finish, I would travel 2 hours to my hometown and have my little brother play it for a few hours (Because I suck at video games!). I felt as though I needed a controller in my hand, even though it was a big screen experience. Kind of sad if you ask me.

Acting was decent, but I stand by the idea the Hayden Christensen is not who I ever would have cast as Anakin. He is whinny and annoying and during his “angry” scenes it feels like he is delivering the lines while suffering through a constipation problem. His co-star, Ewan McGregor, once again does a great job as young Obi-Wan Kenobi. If anything good has come out of the Star Wars prequels, I would say McGregor did a wonderful job of bringing to life young Obi-Wan.

Disappointing to me was the wookies. For months I had heard about “wookie” planet, filled with wookies galore. We only get to see a few minutes of wookie planet and in all honesty, I was unimpressed. I swear I saw a wookie with a gun sitting on the edge of a space age apache helicopter in one scene, but I could be wrong. The whole hyped thing seemed stupid to me.

I could go on for hours about what I liked about the film and what I didn’t like. What I would end up doing though is giving away the few “secrets” left about the film. I don’t want to do that. To sum up my review, if you are a Star Wars nut, you’re going to like the film. If you aren’t a huge fan, and you’ve hated the previous two prequels, don’t bother with this one. Don’t help line George Lucas’s pockets folks. Long ago, Lucas Joined the Dark Side. He sold his soul for Special effects and visual effects. His films look nice, but lack substance. This film is no different.
