A Film Review By Jason L. King
| Starring: Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz
Directed By: Cameron Crowe
Rated: R for sexuality and strong language
Cameron Crowe, maker of movies such as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous does it again creating a top notch movie, with ending twist that can be so confusing it nearly stops the audience dead in their tracks. Tom Cruise, plays David Aames, a rich young man who inherited his father’s wealth and sports an extremely arrogant attitude. He finds himself torn between two women, Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz) and Sophia (Penelope Cruz). It through his story that we learn the truth behind the existance of himself and the people around him. Overall it wasn’t a bad movie. Crowd reaction seems to come out saying “What in the Heck did I just see?” But when carefully examined you realize it’s actually quite simple. Not being a Cruise or Cruz fan, I found myself wanting to smack the smile of of the pretty boys face whenever it existed and wanting to smack myself for watching a movie with Penelope in it, for in some ways I feel she might be in the running for worst female actress of the century right behind Lee Lee Sobiski. Jason Lee plays an excellent supporting role and was a wonderful addition to Crowe’s film as well as Kurt Russell. Both of them spend limited time on the screen but thier acting when on the screen is very well done. Even being an anti-cruise and cruz fan almost as much as I am an anti-clooney fan, I can’t deny that I didn’t enjoy Vanilla Sky at least a little bit.
