Vanilla Sky

A Film Review By Jason L. King

Starring: Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz
Directed By: Cameron Crowe
Rated: R for sexuality and strong language

Final Grade:

Cameron Crowe, maker of movies such as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous does it again creating a top notch movie, with ending twist that can be so confusing it nearly stops the audience dead in their tracks. Tom Cruise, plays David Aames, a rich young man who inherited his father’s wealth and sports an extremely arrogant attitude. He finds himself torn between two women, Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz) and Sophia (Penelope Cruz). It through his story that we learn the truth behind the existance of himself and the people around him. Overall it wasn’t a bad movie. Crowd reaction seems to come out saying “What in the Heck did I just see?” But when carefully examined you realize it’s actually quite simple. Not being a Cruise or Cruz fan, I found myself wanting to smack the smile of of the pretty boys face whenever it existed and wanting to smack myself for watching a movie with Penelope in it, for in some ways I feel she might be in the running for worst female actress of the century right behind Lee Lee Sobiski. Jason Lee plays an excellent supporting role and was a wonderful addition to Crowe’s film as well as Kurt Russell. Both of them spend limited time on the screen but thier acting when on the screen is very well done. Even being an anti-cruise and cruz fan almost as much as I am an anti-clooney fan, I can’t deny that I didn’t enjoy Vanilla Sky at least a little bit.

Not Another Teen Movie

A Film Review By Jason L. King

Starring: Chyler Leigh, Jaime Pressly, Chris Evans
Directed By: Joel Gallen
Rated: Rated R for strong crude sexual content and humor, language and some drug content

Final Grade:

I vaguely remember a few years ago sitting in my lazy boy thinking to myself Gee Scary Movie looks like a funny movie. I think I shall pay $6 to go see that. So I did, and I came out sadly dissapointed. Then a few years later, I got a job at a movie theater and someone said, “Gee we should watch Scary Movie 2.” Against my better judgement, I sat through it and once again I was more saddened by the amount of time I had wasted, but een more saddened by the amount of people who wasted their money on it, unlike me.
So needless to say when I heard the makers of the Scary Movie series began to advertise NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE I thought to myself, the previews make it look slightly entertaining, but once again won’t it just be a waste of my time?
After viewing it I realized something, although crude in spots the movie wasn’t half bad. In fact if I was forced to choose between buying the special edition boxed set of the scary movie movies or a copy of Not Another Teen movie with No Special features, I would choose that over the boxed set any day.
The movie wasn’t nearly as crude, and they seemed to leave out most of the bodily humor the makers seemed to rely so heavily on in the scary movie series. The movie turned into a plethora of spoofs upon spoofs bashing every “teen movie” from Varsity Blues to American Pie, Breakfast Club to She’s All that, 10 things I hate about you and even tossed in a bit of Can’t Hardly wait as well as numerous others. The over all comedy was good if you are into a spoof style movie and especially if you are lookig for something that will bash everyone of those trashy stereotypical teen flicks that seem to flood the theaters and rental stores these days.
My Verdict on the movie: I’m going out on a limb on this one. My initial review that I posted said the following: “expecting decent showing at the box office due to success of Scary Movie, however I think the only thing that will actually be funny is the amount of money you paid for the ticket…” However, I think It will do well in the box office because it overall is a decent spoof flick making fun of a genre that so many people in the world are getting sick of. And Guys,as for the price, if you’re in the mood for a spoof movie, pay the $6 and while you’re at it pay $6 for the cute girl in line next to you the worst that could happen is she never talks to you again…Besides what else were you going to use that money for? Hopefully not to buy yourself a copy of Scary Movie.

Ocean’s 11

The Very First Review By Jason L. King

Rating:Rated PG-13 for language.
Starring:George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and more.
Directed By:Steven Soderbergh

Final Grade:

Last Weekend Ocean’s 11 opened finally pushing Harry Potter out of the number one spot at the box office. But is Ocean’s 11 worth the hype? Going into the movie I didn’t expect much. Hearing that it is a remake of a 1960’s Rat Pack movie I wasn’t convinced that Matt Damon and Clooney couldn’t fill those shoes, and being an Anti-Clooney person it made my fear even worse. I mean after all how could Clooney Fill the shoes of Sinatra in setting up a multi-million dollar heist from Las Vegas Casinos? However, sitting through Ocean’s 11 I realized that it wasn’t bad at all. A nice easy flowing plot and well directed. Steven Soderbergh, director of movies such as Erin Brockovich, The Limey and Traffic, manages to pull it off again making an easy to like movie and over all a good flick even for an Anti-Clooney audience such as myself. The only thing I could wish for was a little more out of Julia Roberts, she seemed to be a waste of talent and could have delivered so much more if given the chance. I was impressed with Andy Garcia’s character he played it quite well, I can’t picture any other actor playing the role as well of casino owner as well as he did. Matt Damon played a decent role, we didn’t get anything outstanding out of him nor did you from Brad Pitt; but its hard to stretch everyone to their fullest potential when you have a star studded cast to work with as Soderbergh did. Despite all of that and since I have not seen the original, (since there seems to be only 1 copy of it in ames Iowa) I’m suggesting Oceans 11 goes on your list of movies to view in the future.
